Easter Time Is Here!

It always seems that people, religious or not, cannot get enough of Christmas. Be the shopping, parties, or all around the jolly and festive vibe of the holiday, people love to celebrate this remarkable day. Even though not everyone truly respects the core message of it being about Christ’s birth, most still hold themselves to a higher standard of being generous and more virtuous than usual. But what about Easter?
What can we all say about this holiday, that only a fraction of those who celebrate Christmas also celebrate? If you ask the average Joe about the first three things that come to his mind about the holiday, your answer will probably include, in no particular order, rabbits, eggs, chocolate, or baby chicks. And do these things actually pertain to what Easter is actually about? Not really. In fact, Easter is entirely centered around the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which is the moment of our salvation!
To be completely honest, I cannot tell you why modern society has chosen things like the Easter Bunny, candy, and egg hunts to be the face of the Easter Holiday. My best guess is that they became associated with Easter by various companies using these items to represent springtime, which is the season that the holiday takes place in.
And at this point in time, these logos and icons have become so synonymous with Easter, that most people would easily be led to believe that the holiday solely represents the season of Spring. And as an example, I for one as a child thought of the day as nothing more than a time of getting free candy from the Easter Bunny and looking around for the eggs he “hid”.
As I have stated above, the real message of Easter is that it is the celebration of Christ’s death and resurrection, something entirely different, and something infinitely more important. Easter at its core is a religious holiday, and a day remembered in the Roman Catholic Church. It was in the springtime that Christ’s passion took place, hence its celebration time during the year, but it was a very horrific and harrowing death on a cross, not exactly something that appears as a happy reason to have a holiday.
But Christ’s death, as terrible as it was, was the price to be paid to atone for mankind and all the evil we have done. The resurrection that took place on Easter Sunday was Christ coming back to the world in His glorified body that He had attained in Heaven, and revealing the victory that had taken place on the cross.
Easter is not about chocolate, bunnies, or chocolate bunnies, but is in fact about Christ’s most glorious victory by dying and rising from the dead. Even though the modern world does not describe Easter in its true, Catholic form, the imagery that we should associate with this holiday should reflect Christ and the cross.
In the end, Easter may be a Catholic holiday, completely different from what the world makes it to be, but that does not split people between indifferent to the holiday, celebrating it incorrectly, or being required of being a catholic to celebrate it. In fact, Easter is meant to be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of their faith or how they view the holiday. We are all called to know the truth of what happened on Easter and what led up to it, and take part in that celebration. So, let us all have a toast and good meal in honor of what Christ did for us, laying down his life to give us eternal life!
