Your Identity is Bull Crap

By: Mission Team

Who are you?
No, not your name. What do you identify with? Think real hard. What’s your answer? You probably answered this question with what sport you played, who your family is, or what school you go to. Well, I got news for you... That’s bull crap! That’s not who you are!

If you got injured, who would you be then? If you got kicked out of school, who would you be then? If your family disowned you, who would you be then? Any of these things we typically associate ourselves with could quite honestly be stripped of us at any moment. Even our name! Prisoners of war for example are just reduced to numbers! I'm not saying someone is going to come to take all these things from you, but for you to lose one of those is quite possible! You could be stripped of anything in this world at any moment. So what do you hold on to? What is left of who you are? What is that part of your identity that no one can take away?

I was at an event and there was this kid I was talking to. And I kept asking him who he was. He had nothing to say other than his name and his position in football! All his worth was in things of the world!

Well, when I was his age, I did the same thing too. I was a wrestler. That’s who I was. Every last second of my time was committed to wrestling. That was until I got injured. Then I had nothing. What was I supposed to say now? Was my identity in being injured? No! Of course not! Your identity is not dependent on your circumstance. Your identity is in something unfailing and so much stronger.

Your identity is in God.
And God says you're amazing. No one can take that from you! At the end of the day, the things of this world will fail you every single time, but God will not. Your identity in Christ cannot be taken from you as a sports season or family member can be. His love for you is eternal.

Think of it like stocks. If you put your money in stocks, you might get some back, but you can ask anyone if you’re going to invest odds, that you are going to lose at some point. Our identity is like this: If you invest your identity in sports or academics or friends and social status, you might be happy for a bit, but I guarantee you they will fail you at some point. If you invest who you are and your identity in God, however, the gain is exponential happiness, and the return is paradise.

It’s bull crap that this society robs people of their true identity. It’s taking away a dollar bill and giving you 2 quarters. And people are letting it happen because they think 2 is more than one. If only we understood that our One God is worth more than all the other “gods” combined. He loves you because of who you are, not what you do or what you’ve done in the past. He loves you for your identity. Your identity is what God says about you and God says you are amazing, and you are His child. THAT is why He loves you.

"See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know Him. Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be, has not yet appeared; but we know that when He appears, we shall be like Him because we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who thus hopes in Him purifies himself as He is pure. " - 1 John 3:1-3
